Shaken Baby Syndrome

Example of brochure available for parents of newborns.  All parents of newborns are provided the brochure as part of the information they receive at hospital discharge.  Most new parents are too overwhelmed to take in a small portion of all the information received at this time.  Several states have been successful in reducing the number of Shaken Baby Syndrome instances by beefing up the in-hospital education for parents.  Pediatricians are encouraged to get information to new parents at the first "post discharge" doctor visit.  This is a time when parents are usually more open to information about their baby and have perhaps already begun to experience the "joy" of the crying infant.  Pediatrician may provide the Coping with Crying brochure and discuss the reasons WHY babies cry; emphasize that sometime "nothing" can soothe the infant; and review the strategies for coping with the stress of their crying infant.
