Recently, Florida has experienced an outbreak in childhood measles cases. Healthcare providers are on the front lines of this emerging public health threat; however, they may not be aware of the latest recommendations for management of measles and communication with parents.
FCAAP has worked with experts to develop an informative and practical webinar designed to equip pediatric healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently address measles diagnosis, testing, reporting, and vaccination recommendations. Led by Ivan A. Gonzalez, MD, DTM&H and Dr. Carolyn Louise Marasco, MD, FAAP, this webinar will delve into the key aspects of measles management in clinical practice.
In his presentation, Dr. Gonzalez will explore identifying, testing and reporting of Measles. Through his presentation, learners will gain a deeper understanding of the clinical presentation of measles, explore the nuances testing, learn about the importance of timely and accurate reporting of positive measles cases, and the critical role healthcare professionals play in disease surveillance and outbreak control efforts.
In addition to clinical aspects of Measles, Dr. Marasco will discuss effective communication strategies for recommending childhood vaccines and addressing parental questions and concerns. Specifically, she will identify the clinical manifestations and characteristic symptoms of measles to facilitate accurate diagnosis in pediatric patients, understand the appropriate diagnostic tests and processes for reporting positive cases, and demonstrate proficiency in recommending routine childhood vaccines and communicating with parents.

About the speakers:
Dr. Ivan Gonzalez received his medical degree from the Rutgers Medical School of Medicine in Newark, NJ. He completed his residency at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and pursued a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Division, at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida.
He is also a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Transplant Liaison at the Miami Transplant Institute. Dr. González has interests in Tropical Medicine, congenital infections, and sequelae from viral exposure in children and transplant recipients. Currently, he is the Program Director of Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship. Dr. González was a 2020 AAP Special Achievement Award Recipient for his leadership related to Pediatric-Focused Zika Education, Research and Treatment Efforts in Florida. He has continued his educational efforts as an invited speaker for the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FCAAP) in topics related to COVID-19 as part of a Live Webinar Series. In 2022, he was invited to be an Ambassador of Infection Prevention and Control FCAAP for Project Firstline AAP/CDC.
Dr. Carolyn Marasco is board certified in pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She’s involved with the BayCare Pediatrics Residency Program, as a core faculty member, the wellness champion, and a continuity clinic site director. She has worked for BayCare Medical Group and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital/BayCare Kids since 2001.
Dr. Marasco graduated from SUNY HSC at Syracuse/Upstate Medical Center in 1995 and completed Residency Programs in Pediatrics at Georgetown University Medical Center and DuPont Hospital for Children. She has been practicing Primary Care since 1998. Previous medical staff appointments for Dr. Marasco include University Community Hospital and All Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Marasco is currently involved with FCAAP’s Immunization Committee volunteering her time and sharing her expertise. Her philanthropy efforts go beyond the medical field with volunteer roles at the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida and Pasco & Hillsborough County School Districts.
