FCAAP NAMES NEW COMMITTEE AND TASK FORCE LEADERS

FCAAP’s Board of Directors has appointed new leaders for the E-Cigarette Task Force, Obesity & Nutrition Committee, and Legislative Advocacy Committee for 2022-2023. Issa Hanna, MD has been appointed as Chair of the E-Cigarette Task Force for 2022-2023. Dr. Hanna is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellow at the University of Florida College of Medicine at Jacksonville. He was the 2020 Tobacco Control Champion and was awarded the 2020 Anne E. Dyson Child Advocacy Award for his advocacy work in the community to improve the health of children. Dr. Hanna was chosen to represent FCAAP as the American Academy of Pediatrics’ E-Cigarette Champion for 2021-2022.

Cynthia C. Roque, MD, FAAP, Diplomate of the ABOM has been appointed as Chair of the Obesity & Nutrition Committee for 2022-2023. Dr. Roque has been practicing general pediatrics at Nemours Children’s Health, Primary Care, Orlando since 2018. Her interests include combating health care inequality and advocating for children and families achieving and maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle by supporting the development of healthy minds and bodies. She also serves on FCAAP’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Brittany Bruggeman, MD, FAAP and Jamee Walters, MD, FAAP have been appointed as Co-Chairs of the Legislative Advocacy Committee, and Robin Straus-Furlong, MD, FAAP has been appointed as Advocacy Champion to the Legislative Advocacy Committee for 2022-2023.

Dr. Bruggeman is a pediatric endocrinologist and physician scientist at the University of Florida. She is a leader in advocacy and policy within the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Diabetes Association. Her current pursuits include the clinical care of diabetes, endocrine, and gender diverse patients and research investigating the natural history and pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes, which is funded through NIH and foundational awards.

Dr. Walters is a pediatric hospitalist at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and the associate program director of the pediatric residency program. She is a clinical instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She has been involved in legislative advocacysince medical school at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and pediatric residency at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, traveling to the state and national capitol to advocate for AAP and FCAAP backed policies.

Dr. Straus is in private practice at Beachside Pediatrics in Bay Harbor Islands, Florida, which she co-founded with Dr. Sandy Lieberman. She is the current Region 5 representative to the FCAAP Board of Directors as well as the Co-Chair of the Chapter’s Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. In her role as the Advocacy Champion to the FCAAP Legislative Advocacy Committee she will serve as a medical expert to the Chapter’s lobbyists and will also serve as a trusted pediatrician point of contract to assist with answering questions from the media about medical issues during the legislative session.
