Sep 11, 2020 | Press Releases

The Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FCAAP) today released updates to “FCAAP Recommendations Regarding School Reopening”, a white paper to assist Florida’s school superintendents as they reopen their school districts. This guidance is pursuant to FCAAP’s position that schools should be allowed to decide how and when to open on a case-by-case basis based on COVID-19 infection rates in each school district.

The following updates have been made to the paper since its original publication on July 28, 2020:

  • Updated recommendations concerning students with special needs wearing masks
  • Detailed recommendations regarding face mask types
  • Further recommendations regarding cohorting of students
  • Recommendation that children may be 3 feet distanced only if 6 feet distancing is not possible,
masks are mandated, and there is adequate ventilation with outdoors being best
  • Recommendation that children who are technology dependent not attend school in person
  • Detailed recommendations regarding return to contact sports
  • Recommendations concerning classroom or school closure criteria
  • Recommendations regarding sharing of data about school infection rates
  • Updated national AAP guidelines for school reopening
